a project of Gotham Arts Exchange
Zia Artists is a management and representation home for some of the finest talents in contemporary dance. Founded in 2001, Zia Artists works with both established and newly formed contemporary dance companies in strengthening artistic programming and increasing performing engagements. Zia Artists works closely with each choreographer on the roster, supporting their creative endeavors and collaborating on how to best represent their work in the marketplace. The companies and choreographers that make up the Zia roster represent an exceptional diversity of artistic work.
Gotham Arts Exchange, Inc. is a non-profit arts organization set-up to provide administrative, management, booking, fundraising, insurance, and fiscal sponsorship services to the artists that make up the roster of Zia Artists. The idea behind Gotham Arts Exchange is to “pool” the resources of many companies together to be able to afford the many aspects of running a non-profit corporation that is vital to the infrastructure of a dance company. By doing this, each dance company that is not an incorporated non-profit becomes a sponsored project of Gotham Arts Exchange.
KEN MALDONADO, Director
Born and raised in New Mexico, Maldonado moved to the East Coast to attend the University of Rochester. He started his career in not-for-profit administration while in Rochester, serving as a development officer with Neighborhood Housing Services, Hillside Children’s Center and Community Health Network. In 1992, he moved to NYC to work with community and HIV/AIDS advocacy groups in fundraising and special event production. It was during the planning of a benefit that incorporated dance that he met a choreographer and was introduced to dance. After this meeting of fate, Maldonado turned his full focus to working with choreographers and dance companies. He was the development director for Circum-Arts Foundation from 1994-98 and for the Parsons Dance Company from 1998-2000.
In 2001, he founded Zia Artists, a management and booking agency for dance artists. In 2003, he founded Gotham Arts Exchange, a not-for-profit arts organization created to provide administrative, management, fundraising, insurance, booking and fiscal sponsorship services for individual dance artists and dance companies. Through Gotham Arts he has also ventured into the role of producer and presenter by producing annual performances: Dance (Dans) at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, Dance Gotham at Symphony Space, and in 2008 a two-week festival, SummerDANZ at Dance Theater Workshop. Maldonado currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Dance/USA and served as Chair of the Agents Council from 2005-2008.
